A longtime customer called to say his HP DV1000 laptop stopped working. A little research showed that he was having the same problem as many other DV1000 owners. Overheating problems. All he wanted to do was get some quickbooks files from the laptop and then retire it. Now, I don’t recommend this for everyone but a quick freeze of the laptop in the freezer was all it took. He was then able to hookup his usb harddrive and copy the quickbooks files and then shut it down.
I know, that’s cold. We now call him Dr. Freeze Love
Some of my customers are agents over at Coldwell Banker All American Realty in Raymore, Mo. They totally get it. All American Realty is sponsoring a First Time Homebuyer Seminar Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 7:00pm. It’s a great time to buy a home and if you are a first time buyer this is a great way to learn the steps to home ownership and also about the $8,000 income tax credit. I like their approach and this is a great way to be pro-active in this market.
If you are using Windows Vista and tired of slow boot times and general slowness disabling superfetch may be the answer. Superfetch works by loading frequently used applications and pages into your computers cache. It will also monitor your current usage and it will fill up the cache once more memory is available. It can take some time to refill the cache and you may notice hard drive activity when the system is idle. Tests have shown that the performance advantages may only show up if there are more than 4GB of RAM.
So to disable it do this.
Open up your services applet by pressing the Windows-key + R and this will bring up the run dialog. type in

services.msc and press enter. Scroll down the list of service until you find Superfetch.
Double-click on superfetch to view the properties.

Click on Stop to turn superfetch off immediately. Then change the startup type to disabled. Done
Well, April 1st came and went with out much fanfare from the Conficker worm. Was it because o f the great work done by us IT professionals or did worm just not receive it’s instructions? Sometimes you have to wonder if the AV vendors are just conning us. I mean come on, how much money did they generate from the latest scare. Maybe the AV vendors secretly hire some programmers in Russia to put these worms out there. Generate a good ROI, keep some people working, no TARP funds needed . Oh my, I think I just felt the little worm move. Well my one eye spotted that Kaspersky Lab’s is reporting Conficker received some new instructions. They have screen shots of the Rogue Anti-virus software (SpywareProtect2009) a so-called “scareware” product that uses fake security alerts to scare consumers into paying for bogus computer security software. So get the word out so we can get me back to solving business problems.
